Let's travel light years back to the end of January when we transformed our classroom into a super-galactic Space adventure! This celebration was the culmination of our Non Fiction Planet Research for all of Walden to enjoy! After careful text and online research, nonfiction writing, poster assembly and clay model building, the first and second grade students were excited to share all of their hard work. Mrs. Goodwin brought in a holiday light projector, we pulled down the window shades, draped dark colored table cloths over shelves, and arranged a path through the classroom from the Sun at the entrance all the way through the inner planets, asteroid belt, and then outer planets. Our classroom was an astronomical sight to see! Walden students across all grades from PreK through 8th grade entered through the yellow bright streamers of the Sun and learned about each planet on a walking tour. Each child was excited and thrilled to talk about and answer questions about their own planet of study. It was quite an adventure and a classroom event to remember!

Hello Parents! My name is Kelsie Manton. Your children know me as Miss Kelsie. I am the student teacher from Cabrini University in grades 1/2. I will be working with this class every day until May 3rd, 2019. I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to work with your children and two awesome teachers over the next fifteen weeks. I went into the field of teaching because I wanted to see children blossom and learn in a way that was unique to them. I quickly learned that not every child learns the same way. This is just one aspect that made me interested in the Montessori theory. Teach to the individual child rather than the class as a whole. I intend to make my lesson plans unique and differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. Some things about me: I grew up in Prospect Park, PA. I started my early childhood education journey at Delaware County Community College, where I received my Associates Degree. In my spare time I like to read, create photo book albums, and interior decorate. I am very much looking forward to this learning experience and hope to get the chance to meet you all along the way! Sincerely, Kelsie Manton
We kicked off the New Year with a new Science Unit: Space and the Solar System. One Fun Friday, we recycled pizza top boxes to create colorful cardboard models of our Solar System. The students used pom poms of various sizes and foil to represent both the inner and outer planets and the asteroid belt. Each student also paired off with a partner to become Planet Experts! The students used the information from their Non Fiction research to create their own mini tri fold board with facts, illustrations, photographs and Non Fiction writing about their planet of expertise. We look forward to sharing these posters and planet knowledge with each other after the long MLK weekend! |
